Port of Skellefteå is being developed to effectively manage the industrial industry's need for freight transportation, through flexibility and focus on how different modes of transport interact. An important driving force behind the investments made in the port is the size of the ships. For several years, the trend has been for ships to become increasingly larger, which means that the number of calls at ports is not increasing at the same rate as the total volume of goods. The increase in ship size places new demands on ports, which need to be able to offer longer and deeper quays and fairway improvements.
-Port of Skellefteå is a conscious port. We provide services that create value for our customers and we make investments that are sustainable for the environment and the future of northern Sweden. We work closely with our customers, the inhabitants and the environment, says Lars Widelund, Port Manager Port of Skellefteå, and continues:
"We want an emission-free port with an environmentally conscious expansion, where we value the residents' attitudes to the port. We are making conscious investments in electrification and choosing renewable energy.
Preparations for the construction of a new quay on the north side have been ongoing since 2017 in the form of work on new land areas and a deepening of the fairway. An application to the Land and Environmental Court for permission to build a quay in connection with the new area on the north side has been made and a decision is expected in the first quarter of 2022.
