Ytterligare eldriven hamnkran ska stärka Port of Skellefteås kapacitet och hållbarhet
New port on the north side
Port of Skellefteå is being developed to accommodate more and larger shipments to meet the needs of the region's growing business community. Production is underway and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
Port of Skellefteå is undergoing an extensive expansion with an investment of SEK 1.4 billion to meet the increased need for more efficient inbound and outbound transportation for the region's business community. By the end of 2027, the port will be equipped to handle larger, and more, vessels with increased cargo volumes, strengthening Skellefteå's role as an international trading center.
An important driving force behind the investments in the port is the physical size of the ships, which have been getting bigger for several years. The fact that ships are getting bigger places new demands on the ports, which need to be able to offer longer and deeper quays, fairway improvements and larger areas for handling goods.
The project in practice
The project includes the construction of a larger, wider and deeper quay, the completion of the new land surfaces and the dredging of the quay area and fairway. Together with the existing quays, the new quay will allow the quays to be specialized for the needs of different types of goods. The northern port area of over 60,000 square meters is being built with preparations to enable fossil-free operations.
Investments are also being made in new technology, with one of the world's first all-electric cranes in place since 2022. As well as being powered by electricity, it can handle heavy loads and has a long reach, allowing it to reach across the width of large ships.

Funders and stakeholders
This project is co-financed by the European Union. Future-proof intermodality, the transportation of goods by several modes of transport, creates the conditions for sustainable and efficient freight transport. The aim is for the project to lead to the development of climate-friendly intermodal mobility throughout the region.

Fossil-free, automated and energy-efficient handling
Development of Port of Skellefteå
Much of the world's transportation of goods takes place via shipping, which means an increased need for well-functioning logistics, as well as a result of the strong expansion that is taking place in Skellefteå.
Based on this and Skellefteå's development strategy, a decision was made in the fall of 2020 on a development strategy for Port of Skellefteå. In short, this is summarized with the following development until 2030:
1. Create new space and a new deep quay
2. Offer new services such as processing of goods or storage services
3. Develop intermodality. Shipping is part of a chain where transshipment to truck and rail is essential. Proximity to Norrbottenniabanan and transshipment to train and car should be easy, flexible and self-evident.
4. Automate and make operational units more energy efficient. This means both new and reinvestment in machinery, electrification, new digital tools and automation development to achieve the goal of emission-free operations.
